How to Save Money by Using E-Coupons

by Natasha on February 4, 2010

E-Coupons are electronic coupons that are connected to your store savings card. One advantage to these coupons is you can stack, meaning two coupons per item, which is more savings for you. As of now, Kroger is the only store in the Memphis area who participates in e-coupons.

Here’s how to get started

1. Register and enter your store card number on the e-coupon sites below.
2. Select the coupons you want to use.
3. Shop for the items on your card. Don’t forget to swipe your card! The e-coupons will come off when the cashier hits the subtotal button.

A few things to be aware of when using e-coupons

1. Be sure to buy the exact brand and size or it may not work. Click on the coupon to see detail. You can also print a list of all or your loaded coupons.

2. Some loaded e-coupons cannot be removed from the card until it expires or when it is redeemed whichever comes first.  Watch those expiration dates by using the print list option on the providers page.

3. E-coupons do not double and are usually only available to load once.

4. E-coupons usually don’t work on manager’s special items, because the manager’s special items have their own bar code. Kroger e-coupon customer service will not reimburse you for an e-coupon that didn’t work on a manager’s special.

4. If you have an e-coupon that doesn’t work there may be many reasons why:

  • Did you buy the correct products?
  • Did you try to combine or stack e-coupons from digital providers? You can only use one e-coupon per item.  Cellfire recommends that you try to redeem Cellfire coupons when you have only a Cellfire coupon for that product.
  • Did you scan your card?
  • Did you use the card that was registered to the providers site? Compare the last 4 digits from the receipt to the card number that is registered. Some people will accidentally use a card that is not registered for e-coupons.
  • Did you use the wrong phone number? If you use a phone number instead of swiping the card be sure and use the phone number that is registered.
  • Did someone in your household already redeem the coupon? Grocery stores will sometimes combine all of the savings cards into one account.
  • Have the coupons expired?

If you are certain that these are not the problem you will need to contact the e-coupon provider. I have told you how to do that with each provider below.

E-coupon Websites

Cellfire. They ask for your cell phone number to sign up, but you can also use your home phone if you don’t plan on using the mobile phone coupons. Cellfire is different than the other e-coupon providers because you can use your mobile phone to redeem your coupons. All you do is load the coupons on your account, when you are at the store pull up your saved offers and show the special code to the cashier. If you want to learn more watch the  How to use Cellfire video.

If there is a problem redeeming a Cellfire e-coupn click the “Contact Us” link on the top right of the page. Next you need to click the “Report a Grocery Redemption Problem” and then “Report Problem” if you answer no to all the questions.

Shortcuts If a coupon doesn’t come off, click “contact us” at the very bottom of the page. Select “Coupon Redemption” under the pick a topic box. They will ask you to pick a sub-topic select “My coupon didn’t redeem when I shopped.”  They will then ask you to fill out the dispute form. Have your receipt and card number ready to fill in the necessary information.

READER Q&A

Reader Danielle has some great e-coupon questions that I’m going to answer for you. Keep in mind that these answers come from my personal experience. If you are new to e-coupons be sure and read my post “How to Save Money Using E-coupon.

There are currently five e-coupon site available for use right now:

1. Question: When the Chex Mix was on sale I checked the Kroger site, Cellfire, and Shortcuts and it appeared that I had 6 e-coupons for Chex Mix. I printed 6 paper coupons, and was so happy. However only two e-coupons deducted.  Does the Kroger site show all of your coupons on your card including the ones from Cellfire and Shortcuts?

Answer: Yes they do. Any e-coupon that is loaded on the card now shows up on your Kroger account with the exception of the Upromise. The Upromise do count toward your limit of 150 e-coupons loaded to your Kroger card though.

2. Question: When I am viewing my Kroger e-coupon account, how do I know if a coupon is a Kroger e-coupon or an e-coupon from another site?

Answer: The way you know if it is a Kroger e-coupon or an e-coupon from another site is if it has “Special offer type:” in red.

Notice the Pillsbury Strudel coupons below, I have one from Shortcuts, Cellfire, and Kroger loaded right now. The two that state Special offer type: are from Shortcuts and Cellfire-if you look at the dates you can tell what site they are from too. The middle coupon is a Kroger e-coupon.

3. Question: If I load an e-coupon from any other site besides Kroger, can I or can I not load the same coupon from Kroger directly, and then have two e-coupons for the same product?

Answer: If Kroger is offering a coupon of the same product then yes you can. However, I have had problems loading the Kroger e-coupons when I already have a product from another site already loaded on my card. If I load Kroger’s e-coupon first then I don’t have near the problems.

4. Question: I have never had more than two of the same e-coupons deduct in the same transaction. Is this the limit on e-coupons?

Answer: I personally have never had a problem with a limit on e-coupons. Just a few weeks ago during the last Mega Event Sale I was able to use three e-coupons of the same item on the same transaction.

The three Pillsbury Toaster Strudels above are currently loaded on my Kroger card. If I went to the store today and bought six Pillsbury Toaster Strudels then these three e-coupons would come off for a total of $1.50 off my purchase.
