Kroger: The End of E-coupon Stacking

by Natasha on March 29, 2011

Despite my successful shopping trip today, more details later, I left in a very sad mood. Kroger has configured their registers (with-in the last two weeks) to no longer accept a paper coupon if an e-coupon has been used.
I had three different items that I had both an e-coupon and paper coupon for that I voided. One was the Chex Mix which I’ll stop by and get later, my paper coupon were much higher in value so I didn’t want to use them. The other two Dove Men+Care and French’s Mustard, I didn’t want unless I could get for FREE so I had them void them off.

Be sure to remove any e-coupons you have for products you plan on using paper coupons for. You can remove Kroger e-coupons by logging on to your Kroger account and clicking on the Remove link as shown above. The coupon removed will be put back into the available coupons to load. Remember ALL e-coupons loaded onto your Kroger card can be viewed from the Kroger website.

**Cellfire and Shortcut e-coupons cannot be removed from your card unless they expire or if they are redeemed.

It is possible to get lucky and have a cashier “push” the paper coupons through but it is their firm policy to not allow any more e-coupon stacking.

I went to the Germantown Kroger last week and purchased the dove men care. When she scanned my paper q it beeped and she called the manager over. He said I had already used and e-coupon, but he pushed the paper one through anyway. Then I tried to use the $6/2 motin pm, which was $2.99 before mega sale. He said that they could not take a printed coupon if it exceeded 75% of the product value, so he wouldn't take it. They didn't seem to care that I got all the ronzoni pasta for free though. I guess that was because none of those coupons beeped.

If the manufacturers do not want Kroger to allow stacking, then so be it; however, I do not understand why Kroger won't double ecoupons, or at least, let you choose between the ecoupon and a paper coupon. We wouldn't have to hold up the line deciding on each individual coupon. They could set the policy that if you hand them a paper coupon, the ecoupon will be cancelled off. It seems to me that this is being handled very poorly. Kroger in the Houston area is going to stop doubling and tripling coupons next month. They are supposed to start some new program that's a secret at this point. My guess is, this is a test to determine whether they will do it nationally. If the economy was hurting Kroger, I could understand the changes they are implementing, but read this article from Fox Business news on March 3, 2011:

NEW YORK — Kroger Inc. said its fourth-quarter profit rose 9% to $278.8 million, or 44 cents a share, from $255.4 million, or 39 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Kroger said its adjusted net income in the latest quarter totaled 46 cents a share. Sales rose to $19.93 billion, from $18.55 billion. Wall Street analysts expected earnings of 44 cents a share, on revenue of $19.38 billion, according to a survey by FactSet Research. Kroger said it plans to buy back $1 billion in stock. Kroger expects 2011 earnings of $1.80 to $1.92 a share, compared to the Wall Street target of $1.92 a share.

I shopped the Bartlett,TN Kroger last night and found out they have stopped stacking paper coupons also. I tried to stack a Kroger coupon with a manufacturer coupon and it beeped. :(

My Kroger in Roanoke, Virginia stopped coupon stacking two weeks ago. I called Kroger e-coupon center regarding removing my e-coupons of my Kroger card and you cannot "remove" cell-fire or shortcuts from your Kroger card. You have to wait until they expire. My advice is to buy multiple Sunday papers instead of loading those e-coupons. That way you can double your Sunday paper coupons under $0.50. Anyone who has found a loop hole in this system please tell!

I had a similar problem, so now I enter my coupons BEFORE entering my Kroger card. It seems to cancel out the e-coupons.
